AI thumbnail prompts for reviews, tutorials and travel videos
Three adaptable AI thumbnail prompts, plus a simple way to brief AI tools without overcrowding the image or making misleading promises.

Write the brief before picking the style
A useful prompt gives an AI thumbnail maker a subject, a setting, a composition and an optional headline. Start with the facts of your video, then add visual direction. The examples below are starting briefs, not guaranteed outputs: replace the topic, objects and words with your own material.
Keep the request focused. Asking for several people, a detailed scene, multiple products and a long headline in one image makes it harder to check the result. If an image misses the point, simplify the brief instead of adding more competing instructions.
Prompt 1: an honest product review
Use the product as the main object and make the question match your actual review. Check the generated product carefully: AI may alter buttons, branding or proportions. If accurate appearance is essential, use a reference you have permission to use and still inspect the result.
EXAMPLE PROMPT
Horizontal YouTube thumbnail for my review of [product]. The product is the largest object, with a reviewer beside it and a simple background. Strong subject separation and clear space for the short headline [headline]. Do not add unrelated products or invented feature claims.
Prompt 2: a focused tutorial
Show what the tutorial teaches rather than a generic success symbol. For a music lesson, a recording desk or instrument can make the topic understandable. Avoid ‘before and after’ imagery unless your video actually demonstrates that change.
EXAMPLE PROMPT
16:9 thumbnail for a tutorial about [specific skill]. One creator demonstrating [relevant action] with [one tool or object]. Clean composition, high contrast and no distracting background objects. Headline [short headline] in clear, readable lettering.
Prompt 3: a travel diary
Choose a real destination and an experience included in the video. Treat AI scenery as an illustration: check landmarks and avoid presenting an invented scene as a photo you took. A factual time or place headline can be more useful than an exaggerated promise.
EXAMPLE PROMPT
Horizontal thumbnail for a travel diary about [destination]. One traveler in a scene inspired by [experience actually in the video], vivid colors, uncluttered composition and clear space for the headline [place or trip detail]. Do not invent recognizable landmarks.
Change one thing at a time
After checking your first version, identify the main problem. If the subject is too small, ask for a closer composition. If the text is hard to read, shorten the headline. If the image feels busy, remove background objects. Changing one direction at a time makes it easier to understand what helped.
In ThumbForge, choose a format and style before generating. The concept assistant can help refine a brief, but the finished image still needs a human review. Check spelling, accuracy and readability before downloading your cover.
