AI thumbnail tutorial: the five-step workflow

Here is how to make YouTube thumbnails with AI: describe a scene that represents your video, choose a horizontal YouTube format, add a short headline and generate an image. Then check the result at full size and phone size before downloading it and uploading it through YouTube Studio.

This AI thumbnail tutorial walks through a beat-making video in ThumbForge, from the first brief to the finished cover. The same workflow works for a tutorial, review or travel diary: replace the subject and headline with details from your actual video. AI helps create the artwork, but you still decide whether it is accurate and ready to publish.

  • Choose one subject from your video.
  • Write a specific scene prompt and short headline.
  • Select the YouTube 16:9 format and a suitable style.
  • Generate a thumbnail and check its accuracy and readability.
  • Download the cover and upload it through YouTube Studio.

1. Choose the one thing your video delivers

Before writing a prompt, finish this sentence: ‘My video shows…’ For our example, the answer is ‘how I build a beat from scratch at my recording desk.’ That gives the cover a recognizable subject: a producer, music equipment and a focused studio scene.

Choose one main subject instead of asking for everything in the video. A crowded image may look detailed at full size but become unclear in a feed. Avoid showing equipment, results or events that do not appear in the video.

  • Video topic: making a beat from scratch.
  • Main subject: a producer at a recording desk.
  • Headline: THIS BEAT HITS.
  • Video title: How I Made This Beat from Scratch.

2. Write a specific AI thumbnail prompt

A useful prompt names the subject, action, composition, background and lighting. Add the exact words you want if the image should include a headline. ‘Make a viral thumbnail’ gives the AI no concrete direction and does not make performance predictable.

Use the example below as a starting point, not a promised result. Replace the scene with your own video subject and check every generated detail. If you want an image without built-in lettering, leave the headline field empty and explicitly ask for no text.

EXAMPLE PROMPT

Horizontal 16:9 YouTube thumbnail for a video about making a beat from scratch. One music producer at a recording desk, with a keyboard and headphones as supporting details. Close composition, clear separation from an uncluttered studio background, bright contrast and room for a short headline. Headline exactly once: THIS BEAT HITS. Keep the face and equipment visible, and do not add other words or unrelated objects.

3. Select YouTube format and a channel-appropriate style

In ThumbForge’s Creator Studio, enter your idea and select YouTube. That preset creates a 1536 × 864 image with a 16:9 shape for a standard horizontal video. Choose a style such as Bold Creator for a punchy cover, Clean Minimal for a simple object-focused composition or Cinematic for a film-like scene.

The concept assistant can help turn your description into a visual brief. You can attach a reference you own or have permission to use, then review the suggested concept before using it. The assistant develops a direction; the finished image still needs to be generated and checked. A reference does not guarantee an exact likeness or an accurate copy of a product.

4. Generate one version and inspect the details

Generate your first thumbnail, then check whether the image communicates your topic without needing an explanation. Read every word. Inspect faces, hands, equipment, labels and background objects for AI mistakes. Treat generated scenes as illustrations, not evidence of something you photographed.

View the image small as well as large. If the subject disappears or the headline is difficult to read, simplify the composition or shorten the text. Change one thing at a time in your next brief so you can tell what improved. Each additional generated image uses another creation; reviewing a result does not require generating it again.

  • Does the main subject match the video?
  • Is the exact headline spelled correctly?
  • Can you recognize the topic at phone size?
  • Do the title and image work together without misleading viewers?
  • Are important details clear of the edges?

5. Download and upload through YouTube Studio

Download your chosen thumbnail from the gallery. In YouTube Studio, open Content, select your video, find Thumbnail, choose Upload file and save the change. YouTube says your account must be verified to upload your own custom thumbnail.

Check YouTube’s current help page for its upload requirements, including accepted image formats and file limits. The correct image shape alone does not guarantee that the file will be accepted. This guide focuses on standard horizontal videos; check the separate Shorts instructions when publishing a vertical short.

What does an AI thumbnail cost in ThumbForge?

Your first 1 thumbnail is free per account, once, with your email and signup; no card is needed for that offer. After it, a one-time $5 pack provides 5 creations, or the $10/month membership includes up to 100 thumbnails per month. Each generated image uses one creation.

Start with one well-briefed version rather than generating many images without reviewing them. The free offer is a single trial creation, not unlimited free access. No AI thumbnail maker can guarantee more views, clicks or revenue: the image needs to fit your video and audience.
